Kits By Mail: Shop Local

New way to support your local LYS and get kits delivered to your doorstep!

Knitting Fever's Shop Local Program

There's another new way to mainline....um..... I mean obtain kits easily from home. Our vendor, Knitting Fever (think Noro, Juniper Moon, Queensland, Jody Long and countless other lines) created a portal to order up loads of ready-made kits and you choose your favorite shop to get credit.

We've talked about Berroco's ongoing Drop Ship Kit Program before (here and here). Difference between Berroco and KFI is KFI you order directly from them-we get credit; Berroco directs you to the shop to place an order. Either way works and it is a huge boon for us. Both are massive collaborative retail evolutions and boy are we excited!

This year KFI launched ready-made kits but alas....as a very small shop with a massive daily to do list....I can't alway pass it along quickly to our customers. One newsletter takes at least 2-4 days to create. Now with this new kit portal....it's easy peasy! Our last Mystery Box used a KFI Noro Kit and it was awesome. Fastest kit we've every pulled together!  Now we have a whole dang website you all can access 24/7

By my count about 38 kits at moment! What's even better: many crochet kits. You can search by yarn line, new to old kits, or use the search icon to type what you're looking for, like "crochet" or "knit". Here's example of two current KFI kits available: Vanessa Scarf (knit) and Hyacinth (crochet)

If this past year+ taught us anything it's you have to be nimble and super careful with the bottom line. As retailers it's so humbling and gratifiying to see our vendors doing the same to support us! Believe me, many other big yarn companies switched up their business models, bypassing their LYS shops, to sell direct to consumers instead.

Megan and I are ever so grateful for KFI and Berroco, who quickly switched up things in order to support us, their retailer partners instead. Countless other shops are here today (like us) because of such forward thinking, collaborative support. Can't thank the owners, staff and our reps enough.

(insert big hug here!)

Head on over to the KFI Shop Local and Berroco Dropship pages and check them out. Happy surfing!

We love Remix!

Remix has been on our shelves since it's debut ages ago. A few ago Berroco switched its put-up style into wonderful center pull balls. Now we're madly, deeply and crazy in love with Remix!! Much easier easier to shelve and we don't chase "tribbles" all over the shop when the suddenly popped out of the cubbies. Based on its success, now we have two weights available: Remix (worsted) and Remix Light (dk/sport) and both available in our online shop.

Why oh why do we love Remix? It's a perfect blend for washable, soft, durable, tweedy garments of all kinds. Items made turn out like a well-worn and loved sweatshirt that you grab every time because it's so comfortable. Because it's non-wool blend is super washable and very strong items hold up great over time. The colors are a beautiful muted, tweedy palette. A fantastic year-round yarn that you'll enjoy using, even when temps hit triple digits. Read all the Remix details here.

How is it made?

It's most unique and amazing aspect: It's a 100%  recycled yarn with a fascinating process!! Berroco yarn uses a low-impact manufacturing process patented in France. Remix was the result of over a year of collaborative work between mill and textile engineers.

Here's Berroco's description:

Remix is made up of 100% recycled fibers, meaning that it’s a blend of nylon, cotton, acrylic, silk, and linen—a combination that yields a sturdy yet soft yarn. Garments and high-quality commercially knit fabric panels left over from the ready-to-wear industry are collected from across Europe and sorted by fiber, then color. Because these pieces are pre-dyed, there is no need to dye them again, which saves water and prevents water pollution. Instead, colors are created by carefully blending garnetted fibers. Garnetted fiber is the result of shredding old textiles to make a new, fleece-like fiber that is ready to be spun into a new yarn.

I'd never heard of "garnetting" fibers! Amazing they can take leftover scraps from clothing industry and turn it into yarn! With no overdying!!?? Simply amazing.

Curious how yarn is made into balls or hanks? Here's a video showing Remix process. This is an older video showing the previous style of balls....you know those annoying round tribbles we're always having to chase around the shop? Well.... they've grown up now and stay on their shelves so much better! Plus the center pull ball is a dream.

Patterns Galore

Reading behind the scenes accounts by designers is a great way to learn new tips and gain insight into a yarn or design process. Here's two to check out.

Donna's Ode to Remix  & Kirsten's Homa Sweater

For more inspiration there's loads of Free Patterns! here and here. On Berroco's website you can see all Berroco Remix patterns here.

One last shout out for #303 Remix Family Collection. This is the debut pattern collection and its one of our favorites.  This is an actual family modeling beautifully all the items.  Papa, Mama and Baby Bears all showing off the great items made up in Remix. Classic patterns for the whole family.

We sell all the Berroco patterns as digital & printed copies. Eventually we hope to add our favorite patterns to the website but for now just give us a shout!

Project of the Week: Comfort Baby Blankets

Super excited about the newest Berroco Project of the Week! So much so I've stopped everything to write up a new blog post and get the kits up in our online shop asap.

Moderne (Left)                            Solaria (Right)

Years ago Berroco published a fantastic book: Comfort Knitting and Crochet: Babies and Toddlers. 50 patterns total both knit and crochet, designed by Norah Gaughan and the Berroco Design Team. Plenty of classics in this book of blanket, garments and adorable accessories.

These new kits from Berroco highlight two knit patterns: Solaria (chunky solid)and Moderne (worsted multicolors). Kits ship directly to you from Berroco ($10 shipping). You'll have a great book for all your Baby and Toddler project needs, present and future. Order your Kits here on our website.

Moderne Kit: Color options are below:
#2 Neutral

#3 Pastel

Here's peek at some of our favorite patterns in the book:

Crocheters Fear Not: There's many adorable patterns included in the book. If any of these call out to you let us know and we'll put together kits. Just email or call!

This last blanket is a favorite of mine and I'm very tempted to once again attempt a fun crochet, ripply style project....even though I've failed often in past! Ripples are hard! LOL

Shop Update: Project of the Week & Hours Jun 1-21st

SHOP HOURS    Jun 1-21st:     Open Mon thru Fri 11-3pm.

Whoohoo! Slowly inching hours up a bit. First time in months we've been able to set hours for more than just a week at a time. Granted...this is only two weeks but I count that as progress.

Now onto a new Berroco Project of the Week.....

Berroco's Project of the Week: Two summer ready patterns in Medina. One knit and one crochet! Maldives (crochet) and Villa (knit) fast easy summer tees! And the heat it's a comin'!

Medina is a perfect summer yarn and we've lots of colors in shop ready for warm weather projects. It has wonderful drape when used at larger gauge than usual. A very sturdy, washable blend that's perfect for all types of projects-knit, crochet and even great for loom weaving. And amazing yardage to boot!

Warm colors ebb and flow in this long-color repeating yarn that is ideal for summer accessories and garments. Medina blends cotton, acrylic, and viscose in a DK-weight yarn with gorgeous colors. One of our favorite year round yarns.

Click here to pick your color# (tip: use drop down menu to pick color# & pic pops up).

Sneak Peek of Brand New Bath Line

Tried and True by Illume. Freshly arrived and priced. Eventually will get into the online shop too. For now have fun being tempted by these pics! Candles, room spray, hand soaps and hand creams. We needed a little pretty, fresh and new right about now!

Shop Update: Softly, softly we open

Last week our county allowed to tentatively open up just a wee bit more. The state Stay at Home order still in place but locals can now shop again in person! We're slowly opening with reduced hours for next several weeks. Taking it week by week for the rest of the month.
May Hours
May 18-24: Mon, Tue, Fri  11-2
May 25-31st: Tue, Wed, Fri  11-2
Closed Sat, Sun and Memorial Day

Come June we anticipate expanding hours but want to see how our little county fares as we open up. The next few weeks will reveal if there's a spike in new cases as intra-county traffic increases....or not. Hopefully it's the latter!
There's a few caveats for retailers: 5 people inside max (based on our size shop), we'll mask up to protect customers, have Purell at counters, we daily wipe down surfaces and I'll open up both doors to get a lovely cross breeze (as weather allows) which helps keep air fresh and flowing.

We're happy to offer curbside too. Just give us a call or email to arrange. We want our customers to feel safe and comfortable shopping. 209-728-8261 or maisieblue@gmail.com

Find us on Instagram or Facebook. I tend to use Instagram for quick little updates so this is good spot to reach me. The newsletter or blog posts take a bit more hurdle jumping to get posted.

Our website continues to expand product online for purchase. We expect a return to closures in some form again this Fall as the flu season returns. In meantime we'll continue to add products and nimbly navigate this new reality. Today I posted up the latest Berroco Project of the Week: Penrose & Eirian poncho and capelet in Cambria, a new summer yarn I adore

Last week's project highlighted Lettlopi Icelandic Wool and a traditional yoke pullover-Weatherman
Few weeks back we had the wonderful Derecho Sweater in Remix Light, an easy top-down tee.

That's it for the shop update. Meanwhile in our family last week someone turned Sweet Sixteen!

We gathered for first time as a family since shut down and it was wonderful. Mom baked the most amazing Strawberry Cake!! It was so so yummy,
We had little mini photo shoot then watched Cars on Mosey's new outdoor projector and screen. We froze! Usually her birthday we are dying of heat and sweating but not this year. I loved it!
Kids practiced proper social distancing....
But this guy refuses to recognize any social distancing etiquette!
Flashback to earlier days....
Gently cradling her brand new brother.....
Past surprise birthday breakfast of chocolate cupcakes at 7am
Our memorable family trip to Hawaii a lifetime ago.....
One of my favorite candid snaps of her.....

I love my beautiful niece to the moon and back! Can count on her to always ready for fun, laughs and chillin' together on the couch.
The past sixteen years flew by and I'm so proud of the beautiful young girl she's become.
I adore being her Wacky Auntie! Look forward to growing old together.

Until next newsletter....Enjoy the week!
